Rumbles and cheers rolled out of the Haw Creek Elementary gym on Tuesday evening, as kids and their families drummed and danced during a special fundraiser.
Steve Campbell, a Haw Creek PTA member and Musical Director of Asheville-based Dancing Drum, led a day of drumming assemblies at the school and capped off the fun with a night of interactive demonstrations with families. Kids danced with the Haw Creek Hawk mascot, took turns soloing on a big drum in the center of the gym, and let the rhythms flow. Family Drum Night raised money to bring more visiting artists, assemblies, field trips and enrichment opportunities to Haw Creek students.
“Drumming is not only about making music; it’s also a medium through which students can work together to build a school community, learn to focus in a dynamic environment, and enjoy an energetic and productive outlet for creative self-expression,” Mr. Campbell said.
This is Family Drum Night’s second year, and Principal Christen Davidson said it’s a powerful tool for family and community engagement.
“Our goal is to build relationships that last beyond the elementary years, and we believe events like these help foster ongoing partnerships that not only benefit our students this year, but in future years as well,” she said.
