Welcome to First grade with Mrs. Welch

Welcome to first grade with Mrs. Welch and Mrs. Taylor!

We are very excited about this new school year of learning and growing with your child! Below we have listed information about things going on in our classroom as well as some school policies.

Each day your child will bring home a Homework Folder that will contain important information.  The folder consists of:

  • Monthly Calendar with the schedule for special classes and activities.

  • Baggy Homework and Reading Log  Each night, Monday-Thursday, your child will bring home a book in a “baggy”.  We ask that you take the time to read with your child each night and record the title of the book on the reading log. This is very important to the development of your child’s reading skills.

Homework Folders need to be returned every day. Any important flyers or announcements of upcoming events will be placed in the folder. Thursdays will include all school wide information  If you have a note or important information for us, please place it in the folder as well.  We will check the folders for notes and homework each morning.

Discipline Policy

Our classroom expectations.

* I will be respectful.

* I will be responsible.

* I will be safe.

We have discussed what each of these rules means and what our expectations are a successful year.

We will be using class dojo, an online point system for behavior.  Students will earn positive points when following school expectations and negative points when needing reminders.

Parents and students will be given a code to access their dojo reports.

My favorite part!

We also are looking for any extra special situations to praise your child.  Your child can earn “hawk tickets”.  Each day we have a drawing from the hawk tickets to earn a special pass.  We also look for chances to send home a Hooray It Was An Awesome Day certificate with your child for extra smart thinking, contributing to class discussions, or great manners.  These are hard to get so encourage your child to have these special moments.

A penalty box, timeout space, will be used if a student needs time out from activities during class and a note will be made to parents.  Penalty box offences are excessive talking, unsafe movement, disturbing others, interrupting, and refusing to following directions.

We strive to build class morale and develop excitement for learning.  We love to see students excited about learning and excited about school!

Additional Information

SNACKS- Each day we will have a snack time.  Please send your child a SMALL snack each day.  Some good choices would be a bag of goldfish, crackers, an apple, etc. Since we have snack during instructional time, please do not send in juice or anything that will get on fingers and make a mess.

LUNCH- Our lunchtime will be at 10:40.  Lunch cost $2.35. You have the option of paying for lunch each day, weekly, monthly, or even yearly.  Parents are always welcome to come and share lunch with students.

LUNCH EXTRAS- The cafeteria has extra food items to purchase, such as frozen treats, juices, chips, etc. If you would like for your child to purchase extra items, send extra money and a note saying it is okay for them to purchase an extra item.

BREAKFAST- If you bring your child to school in the mornings and want them to eat breakfast, he/she must be in the cafeteria for breakfast NO LATER than 7:40.  All students should pick up breakfast before coming to class.

TRANSPORTATION- Any time you plan for your child to travel a different way home other than what is stated on the information sheet you filled out on meet the teacher day, please send a note if the change occurs during the day.  We must have a note before we can alter any student’s transportation.
