Fans will want to cheer extra loud for the Haw Creek Elementary Hawks at the November 2 football matchup between Reynolds and Roberson High schools! This is thanks to an innovative reading program the Rockets launched this fall that takes aim at literacy. Rocket Readers teams up younger students from Haw Creek with athletes from A.C. Reynolds High to meet reading goals in the fall, winter, and spring.

“The Reynolds athletes and coaches are very excited to welcome our selected readers,” said Ms. Katy Laws, physical education teacher at Haw Creek. “We hope to see our community there on Friday night to share in the fun of this new Rocket Reading event!”

On Thursday, students enjoyed their first All Star Break, when the varsity athletes put on their school colors and spent the morning reading books at Haw Creek. Small groups of students spread out in the media center and in classrooms while the older students read aloud and answered questions from the kids. So far, the students from both schools are enjoying the new relationships.

Reynolds’ principal Ms. Doris Sellers explained that the program lets her athletes see first-hand how young students look to their example.

“This is an exciting opportunity for the young kids to grow in their reading skills with athletes that they look up to as role models,” she said.

The effort was launched by Ms. Laws and her husband Coach Shane Laws of Reynolds High football. The Laws family is grateful for the support of their principals, Ms. Sellers and Mr. Jay Dale, for helping make the program a reality. Ms. Laws also specifically mentioned teacher Ms. Sarah Camby as being key to the program’s successful start.
