Meet the Teacher

Welcome to my Classroom

Crystal DeLoughery (de-lor-ee)
Exceptional Children's teacher
This is my 8th year of teaching at Haw Creek Elementary, I taught here from 2010-2013, then I taught at Eblen Intermediate School, and I returned to Haw Creek in 2017. I have also previously taught at West Buncombe Elementary School, Enka Middle School, and Emma Elementary School.  I moved to Asheville in 2003 from Guam, where I taught high school for 4.5  years and did my student teaching in a 4th/5th grade resource classroom.  I lived in Guam for a total of 10 years, having moved there in 1993 to fulfill a sense of adventure and to pursue my Bachelor's degree in education in special education at the University of Guam. I have been a teacher since 1998, although I have taken a year off with each of my children when they were babies.

I am originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico. I briefly lived in Chicago and Israel as a child and spent most of my childhood growing up in California - from San Diego to Arcata, spending my adolescent years in the San Francisco Bay Area. Asheville is the 19th city I have lived in! I love to travel, two of my favorite places outside of the U.S. that I visited were Bali and Thailand.  I hope that my past experiences will enhance my techniques and strategies for working with the diverse backgrounds and needs of my students.

In 2012 I became a National Board Certified Teacher.   My husband, Rich teaches Science at North Buncombe High School and we have two children. Micah is in 8th grade at ACRMS and Cassandra is a Junior at ACRHS.
